On Nov 5, voters will be asked if Missouri should ban ranked-choice voting.
Ranked-choice voting means voters can rank their candidates in order of preference. This would be most relevant in a primary election. Currently, voters must choose one person on a ballot.
Amendment 7, (if approved) would prohibit ranked choice and approval voting in Missouri and add language to the Missouri Constitution so noncitizens would be forbidden from voting in elections.
Proponents are for ranked choice voting so they can force candidates to represent their views of vote. Some people, however, think ranked-choice voting is confusing.
The official ballot language:
Missouri Constitution be amended to:
- Make the Constitution consistent with state law by only allowing citizens of the United State to vote.
- Prohibit the ranking of candidates by limiting voters to a single vote per candidate or issue.
- Require the plurality winner of a political party primary to be the single candidate at a general election.
