Middle school social studies teacher Darcie Dreher has come to Blue Springs South to make history.
Dreher, who used to teach at Moreland Ridge Middle School now works here and she could not be happier.
“I have felt so refreshed and energized as a teacher. It’s amazing,”
Now, she is teaching World History and US History, and she finds it interesting to see some of her former students.
“It’s really cool to see a lot of my former students grown up a little. I always kind of wondered what they’re doing and how they’re doing after they leave my classroom,” Dreher says.
Dreher says that she always loved history and enjoys reading history books.
“A lot of people think that it’s boring. It’s in the past and it’s already happened. But I think that it’s interesting to rediscover. We don’t always know the whole story. I feel like there’s always more to be learned and new perspectives and I always appriciate figuring out something new about the past,” she says.
Dreher didn’t actually want to be a teacher to begin with; she originally wanted to be a journalist, but realized that she needed a more social job.
Dreher says that her aunt was one of many teachers who inspired her to become a teacher. She was always pushing her to be better.
“She recently passed away…she was one of my favs. She was hard, she was tough. But she was always fair, and she made me a better writer and a better student,” she says.
When not working on school or taking one of her three kids at South to cross country meets, Dreher loves to read and go on local trails. She also says how she’d like to travel.
“I really like to travel. That is a difficult thing as a history and geography teacher…And it’s an expensive hobby, so I don’t get to do it often,” Dreher says.
Dreher is also a sports fan. However, she doesn’t root for Kansas City teams.
“I am a transplant from St. Louis…as a baseball fan that’s been adjustive. And as a football fan as well…That is a little rough, but I really enjoy Kansas City,” Dreher says.
Dreher’s main goal is to help her students grow and become better than they were before.
“My goals would be to hopefully help my students have an appreciation of learning that goes beyond my classroom. And then to be successful humans, not just students, like successful people. It’s not just about the grade in your classroom, you have to be a successful person. Who is a good person outside of the four walls of the room and to treat people kindly and with respect,” Dreher says.
All in all, Dreher has enjoyed being here at South.
“Honestly, it’s been the best experience in just a couple of weeks. I have been so, so thrilled,” she said.
