Intense is just one of the many words you can use to describe the ping pong club, but that is only when they’re at the table. They have formed a motto for themselves and have lived by it: “Embrace the grind”. Despite the intensity at the table this group of guys and girls have formed quite the bond with one another.

Although this year might be the first time you have heard of the ping pong club, it certainly has been around longer than that. When ping pong club sponsor Nathan Dorsch first started teaching at South, he was asked to start sponsoring the club. Dorsch is particularly happy with this group of pongers.

“This is by far the most enthusiastic group we have ever had,” Dorsch said.

Not only is this club more enthusiastic than ever, it has also grown immensely. Not just from last year to this year, but from the beginning of this year to now. It started with about 10-15 students but now, there is consistently 25-30 students showing up every week.

The growth of this club can be credited to a Twitter account that is ran by ping pong manager Carter Woods. Woods really wanted to get the message out there that ping pong is the real deal at South. The Twitter account is             @BSSPingPong and is slowly but surely growing. Woods is also an active member of the club, he currently has a knee injury but that has not stopped him from embracing the grind.

“It’s nice to be a part of something so meaningful to South and every student in the building,” Woods said.

The members of the club like to be thought of as more of a team rather than a club, and in fact refer to themselves as a family. Sophomore Keaton White is amongst the many who love this group.

“We are brothers and sisters, and hope to leave a legacy behind for the future Blue Springs South pongers,” White said.

On a more serious note, the club might not be just a club for much longer. Some of the members of the club have been rallying trying to make ping pong a varsity sport here at Blue Springs South. While this may seem crazy, it may not be that far off.

“We are starting to look into doing some friendly competitions with other schools in the area,” Dorsch said, “whether it becomes a full fledged sport or not, I don’t know quite yet.”
